Reflection

Experience


Across all three tasks, I experienced a steady growth in understanding typography from both a technical and creative perspective. Task 1 introduced me to the fundamentals of typographic hierarchy, grids, and visual structure, helping me understand how typography guides attention and shapes communication. Task 2 pushed this further by allowing me to experiment with expressive type through key artwork and personal letterform creation, making the process more hands-on and personal. Task 3 was the most immersive, as designing my own typeface challenged me to translate abstract concepts into a functional and expressive visual system. Overall, these tasks helped me connect theory with practice and build confidence in using typography as a core design element.


Observation


Throughout the tasks, I observed how small typographic decisions such as spacing, weight, alignment, and form can significantly affect mood, clarity, and meaning. I noticed that typography does not work in isolation; it interacts closely with color, imagery, layout, and concept. Feedback from my lecturer played a key role in helping me see weaknesses in consistency, clarity, and structure, and guided me to refine my work more professionally. I also observed my own design process becoming more thoughtful, critical, and intentional as I progressed from analysis to creation.


Findings


From these tasks, I learned that typography is not just about readability, but about storytelling, emotion, and identity. Effective typography requires both creativity and precision, balancing visual expression with clear communication. I found that concept-driven design, supported by research and testing, leads to stronger and more meaningful outcomes. These projects strengthened my technical skills, critical thinking, and ability to justify design decisions. Most importantly, I now feel more confident using typography as a powerful tool in future design projects, especially when it plays a central role in visual identity and branding.
